Find LMDC Release Records

To find someone released from Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, separate a current custody lookup from proof of a past release. Jefferson County release records may come from the jail transaction, Kentucky release notification system, or the court that ordered bond, dismissal, time served, or transfer. A person who no longer appears in the current roster may have left LMDC, but that change alone does not show when, why, or where the person went. The best search follows the person across the correct local, state, or federal custodian and preserves the exact status shown.

Where LMDC Releases Lead

Louisville Metro Department of Corrections operates Jefferson County's main local jail at 400 South Sixth Street. It holds people in the local criminal process, including many awaiting a court result and some serving local sentences. An LMDC release can end with a return to the community, but it can also be a transfer. Kentucky Department of Corrections, another county, federal authorities, or immigration authorities may become the next custodian. For that reason, a release statement should name both the agency and the event. “Released by LMDC” is narrower and more accurate than saying the person is free.

The official LMDC inmate-information hub points to a product labeled Current Inmates. Its public configuration shows current offenders only. A name that vanishes is a useful prompt to check another source, not a durable release record. Kentucky VINE may report that a person is not in custody and give a release date. The LMDC booking and release transaction can supply the local event, while a Jefferson District or Circuit Court file can show the legal order that led to bond, remand, dismissal, or time served.

Custody distinction: the live LMDC roster answers who is held now. VINE, an LMDC release sheet, and the court order are the stronger chain for a person who has left.

Confirm an LMDC Release

Start with the person's full name and, when known, the CIN or booking number. Stable identifiers reduce mistakes caused by common names, aliases, and spelling differences. Search the official current roster first only to determine whether LMDC still lists the booking. Then search Kentucky through VINELink. A released result should state that the person is not in custody and provide the date released from that listed custodian. Check every matching local and DOC record because Kentucky warns that one person may have both.

  1. Open the LMDC current-inmate search from the official agency hub and record the exact search time and spelling used.
  2. Search Kentucky VINE by partial name or available jail identifier, then compare each match carefully.
  3. If the person is absent or VINE shows release, request the LMDC release transaction for the identified booking.
  4. Check the Jefferson court case for the signed order or docket entry that explains the legal cause.
  5. If the record indicates transfer, continue in KOOL, the BOP locator, ICE locator, or the named receiving county.

A court date and a physical release time are not always the same. Staff may need to process bond, verify an order, calculate credit, check another warrant, or complete a transfer. Kentucky VINE is useful for custody status, but it does not replace the court disposition. The Jefferson County released inmate search describes how these sources fit together.

Request LMDC Release Records

For a past booking, use the corrections-specific open-records form or Louisville Metro's general request portal. Ask for an existing record rather than asking staff to conduct research or draw a conclusion. Identify the person, CIN or booking number if known, date range, and the exact fields sought. Useful fields include booking time, actual release time, release type or reason, charge or case reference, and receiving agency or destination if maintained. Request a booking photograph separately when it is relevant because the image proves the booking identity, not the later release.

Kentucky's Open Records Act controls access and permits lawful exemptions and redactions. KRS 61.880 generally requires an agency determination within five days, excluding weekends and legal holidays. That period is a response rule, not a promise that every record will be delivered at once. The official online roster's short public life does not set the retention period for the underlying jail record. Louisville Metro's retention schedule, not the time a name remains online, governs how long a record series is kept.

Requested itemWhat it can establish
Booking and release transactionArrival, departure, and recorded local release type
Court order or docketBond, dismissal, sentence, remand, or other legal cause
Receiving-agency entryWhether departure was a transfer rather than community return
Booking photographIdentity tied to that booking, not present custody status

Keep the agency response with the request. If an entry appears wrong, send LMDC the stable identifier, disputed field, and a copy of the court order or other source that supports correction.

LMDC Release Record Contacts

The Main Jail Complex is the central LMDC site listed by Louisville Metro. The official address and phone directory should be checked before travel because operational instructions can change. The same directory separates the units that handle money, property, and identification records.

Property and money: 502-574-2146
Identification Bureau: 502-574-2190

Check the live directory for current operational instructions. Direct a historical record request through the formal portal so there is a dated submission and trackable response. Staff should be asked to confirm which building processed the booking or release before a family member travels downtown.

The available manifest includes a successful image of the official contact page. The LMDC contacts source shows the agency's published locations and unit numbers.

Hall of Justice Bond Releases

Louisville publishes a distinct pretrial release route through its Pay a Bond instructions. The Hall of Justice bond desk accepts in-person payments around the clock. A limited self-bond route also has stated residency, case-type, balance, and fee conditions. Those facts describe how a qualifying bond may be posted; they do not guarantee an immediate exit from the Main Jail Complex.

After payment, LMDC still must match the payment to the correct case, receive and process the order, check for other holds, and complete discharge steps. A person can have more than one case. A bond in one matter may therefore coexist with custody under another. Preserve the receipt, case number, and payment time, then verify the actual LMDC departure through VINE or the release transaction.

Leaving LMDC After Release

LMDC does not publish a dependable general release hour on its inmate-information hub. Families should not assume that release will occur in the morning, evening, or at a fixed weekend window. Confirm the actual facility, pickup point, and instructions with LMDC. The Main Jail Complex sits in central Louisville near the downtown court environment, but a court hearing location is not necessarily the physical exit point.

For public transit, use the live TARC trip planner rather than saving a route number. Stops, service hours, and routes change. A family member planning a pickup should confirm the exit with LMDC before waiting at an assumed door. If release becomes a transfer, transportation plans for a community return no longer apply.

Property and remaining-account questions have their own official contact. Louisville Metro's retention schedule says the property-receipt file documents property held for return at release, asks that property be claimed within 90 days after release, and retains that file for two years after final entry. A separate record series covers the check for the remaining account balance. These are administrative release tasks, not proof of the court outcome.

LMDC Transfers and Other Custodians

A Kentucky state transfer should be checked in Kentucky Offender Online Lookup. KOOL can display custody or supervision status, location, conviction information, projected dates, and parole history for KDOC records. A federal handoff belongs in the BOP Inmate Locator. An immigration handoff belongs in ICE's Online Detainee Locator. None of those systems is a substitute for the LMDC release transaction, and the LMDC current roster cannot establish departure from the later custodian.

Release
Departure from one named custodian, which may be to the community or another agency.
Transfer
A move from LMDC into another jail, prison, federal, or immigration custody.
Discharge
An end to the relevant custody or sentence status shown by the responsible agency.
Detainer
A request that the holding agency give notice and allow another authority to assume custody.

Record the source's exact words. “Not in LMDC custody,” “released,” “paroled,” and “not in BOP custody” describe different events. Keeping the custodian attached to the status prevents a local jail release from being mistaken for the end of all restraint.

Match the LMDC Booking

Identity checks matter because LMDC, VINE, the Jefferson clerk, and a receiving agency may format the same name in different ways. Preserve the CIN or booking number while a current record is visible. Pair it with the case number, booking date, and neutral identity fields. A photograph can help connect a person to a booking, but it cannot prove the later release, guilt, or present status. Ask for the photograph and release sheet as separate records when both are needed.

If a common name produces several VINE matches, inspect each local and KDOC entry rather than choosing the first result. Kentucky specifically warns that one person may have both a local-jail record and a state DOC record. Registering or checking both can reveal a transfer that would otherwise look like a community release. Preserve the custodian name and date with every result.

A correction request should go to the office that created the disputed field. LMDC can address its booking and release transaction. The Jefferson clerk can address a docket or signed order. KDOC, BOP, or ICE must address its own later record. This source-by-source approach keeps one mistaken entry from being copied across the whole release timeline.
